The Zone.

This morning, on the last km of her 5km run, Kym went into ‘The Zone’. Her pace picked up considerably even while her breathing and gait became more relaxed. She looked calmer and happier, yet was running faster.

I explained the phenomenon to her when she excitedly told me how weird it felt and how effortless it was. It wasn’t the first time, she said, but this time, she realised what was happening and tried holding on to the feeling.

Unfortunately, as all sportspersons know, it never lasts, though it feels like the greatest thing in the world when it appears! Like how we wander through most of life without meaning or purpose, except for those rare times when we find love and hope. It is then that we enter ‘The Zone’.

Let us hope we remain young enough to enjoy those emotions when they hit but old enough to know they are but fleeting moments of pure joy that make life worth living.
