About Me: Kedar

This is my space. To ramble, rant, or ruminate. You are welcome to join me. You can see more of me here. I am an IAF+Air India brat (my father and my kid brother, both have donned the wings of the Indian Air Force) growing up in cantonments across the nation, and attending 12 schools before graduating as an Electrical Engineer from Pune University in 1994.

I speak, read, and write English, Hindi, and Marathi (in that order of proficiency), and am very active on social media (mainly Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and lately, Threads and YouTube too), though I do not engage beyond first or at most second level comments. My philosophy for writing can be found here.

Professionally, I am consulting with young people heading their own startups. If you are a startup and need an impartial Entrepreneur-in-Residence to bounce your ideas off, get practical advice from, and basically have around for the 33 years of hard-earned experience in starting up, running, and even shutting down companies, then I am your man. To start a conversation, mail me here.

Personally, I am deeply and passionately engaged in educating (and learning with) my daughter (who was born on my 42nd birthday!) in a non-formal setting and chronicling her (and my) journey. Indeed, unlike most kids who want to become pilots and firemen, actors and doctors, and so on, during my childhood, when I was asked what I’d want to be when I grew up, I’d always answer, ‘Father.’ So, in a way, I am living my dream. I consider myself the luckiest man on Earth (until life is discovered on other planets).

In my spare time, I love to ride/drive, travel, try different foods, watch movies (I love murder mysteries, war movies, and heists), read (mostly non-fiction), debate, and sometimes play golf or squash, or if it’s low enough stakes, poker.

I am politically promiscuous, in the sense that I do not follow a specific political or social party or leader but, from instance-to-instance, choose the argument (and hence, the side making that argument) that best suits my ideological stance of secular humanism. You can find my posts about politics here.

I love dogs and horses (though it’s been a rather long time since I rode one) and am an avid biker with a Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor, who I call BattleCat III. Follow my travels and travails on the bike here.

About my opinions, they are how I like my morning tea: extra strong, piping hot, somewhat dark, grounded in earthy aromas and spices, something that instantly wakes you up, and served without standing on ceremony.

Try me. Start a conversation! What have you got to lose?

A Time to Think? To all the right-wingers who sti A Time to Think?

To all the right-wingers who still claim to believe in democracy and accountability (presumably why you voted out the INC-led UPA-II eleven years ago, if we're to take you at your word) I have a simple question.

At what point, after a tragedy of what proportions, in what area of their portfolio, and at how much loss to the nation, do you believe a Union Minister (of whichever party) under whose watch the said tragedy unfolded, should take moral responsibility and resign?

Give me any hypothetical scenario. Absolutely any.
Spell it out. I’m listening.

On the same vein, though an unrelated(?) subject: why do you idolise Lal Bahadur Shastri?

Is it his well-known frugality and honesty?
Is it his simple living, plain clothes, and total rejection of power’s frills?
Is it his socialist leanings? His staunch Gandhism?
Is it his moral stand when, as Railway Minister, he resigned after an accident?
Is it his resolve in facing an adversary who, at the time, was our military equal?
Is it his ability to negotiate a good and honourable deal for the nation under hostile global pressure?
Is it his devotion to his wife? His humility? His sense of duty?

What part of Shastriji’s life, speech, behaviour, or conduct as a leader actually makes him your hero?

I ask because… well, you know why.
No need to answer me.

But answer it in your own head.

And ask yourself:

Does your cult leader today display literally any of those qualities you hold so dear?
Any of them at all?

Is it time to ask Modi and Shah to go?
Is it time to admit they are not your ideal leaders?
Is it time to accept they have caused, are causing, and will continue to cause harm to this beautiful nation you claim to love?

Ask yourself.

The answer will surprise you... Today is the last The answer will surprise you...

Today is the last morning together before we part (we leave with our Masi for Coonoor on a jet plane tomorrow at 0230H, before the Sun even thinks of rising), to meet again perhaps 2-3 months from now during our summer vacays, and we are craving a pancake at our favourite breakfast joint, where we have so many happy memories! Baba Bear also hasn't been there for a while. And so, we headed to this little café off North Main Road that we used to hang out at so much when we were younger.

Here's a quiz, though, for those who think they know the Bears: On that table, there's a pair (yes, two) of sugar-loaded Nutella-Banana pancake with a tall glass of cold milk and a single low-sugar Lemon-Honey pancake. Which order is which bear's?

Who's laughing now? In January, I made a post on Who's laughing now?

In January, I made a post on all my social media platforms wondering how any POtUS can rule by decree. I wondered aloud about an unelected billionaire getting so much power. Where is the legislature, I asked? What about the judiciary? Civil society? And will the armed forces listen to him if he's giving them what constitute illegal orders? I was shocked at what was happening to the world's foremost defender of democracy in its own home.

I remember the response. Mockery, laughter, telling me how I don't understand the American democratic institutions, how deeply engrained and enshrined freedom and democracy is in the American psyche, and how nobody can just 'take over'. I was also booed, being compared to a conspiracy theorist, and told to, if I remember correctly, 'calm my tits'.

As I watch the mayhem and chaos that the USA has descended into, I want you to do your best imitation of John Oliver when you visualise me uttering the next word: "Cool"

P.S.: Democracy cannot be taken for granted. Nothing is unbreakable. As Douglas Adams famously said, "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." Don't let hubris get to you. And most certainly, don't mock the fucking canary as it gasps for its last breath in the mine you are working. That might be the last time you laugh.
