So, every morning, when we ride or drive to Kym’s athletics training venue, we talk about stuff. Mainly, she asks me questions that have been bothering her and I answer to the best of my abilities.
When she asked me, a couple of days ago, ‘Mr Baba, what’s inside a seed?’, I thought this was a great opportunity to teach her how to do research by herself. So, this morning, when we got the opportunity to spend the day together because by some wierd coincidence, all her tutors were ill, I taught her safe surfing (for those of my friends this raises red flags for, note that I am aware of the dangers of unlimited, unhindered, and unsupervised internet access for kids and as parents, we have done what we can to ready her, and it is time for her to explore), showed her how Boolean search works, and let her at it.
A few hours of trial and error later, she got the hang of it and found out what she wanted. Unfortunately, she could not put it all into a presentation, and I suggested she do the simplest one to explain the basics. This is the result. As you can see, she ended up making it too plain. Also, she needs a lot of practice and training to be able to present well. That, and her mother agrees with me on this (given that she would have been an actor herself had her father not completely denied her permission to do so during her younger days), is her mum’s job, and will be tackled at an appropriate time.
At the moment, for what it’s worth, here’s Kym explaining a small part of what she learnt about the structure of a seed by researching the topic by herself.
Note that it isn’t the depth of her knowledge or the style of her presentation that I am so impressed by; she’s got a long way to go before that happens. It is the fact that she did all the digging and studying by herself. I love her so much, and am so proud.
