Mamma bear turns another year older (and cuddlier) today. And we had so much planned for her. But last night was a bit of an adventurous one.
It so happened that when we tried to give a good night kiss to our Masi’s Shih Tzu, Rafa, while he was napping, he snapped at us and kind of bit us just under our right eye. There was bleeding, and everyone was upset (Paediatricians and veterinarians were called, and everyone was assured it was nothing to worry about, just like we were insisting). We weren’t moved. We took it like a champ that Baba bear says we are, even cuddling with Rafa when we finally retired at night. He’s a dog. It isn’t his fault. We just have to be more careful when he’s taking his beauty sleep and not disturb him. By the morning, we were fine, the both of us, and ready to celebrate Mamma bear’s birthday.
This morning, we first sang Mamma bear ‘Happy Birthday’ on the guitar (we also included ‘May God bless you’ because we were in a rebellious mood and wanted to see how Baba bear responds to it; but when we looked up to see his face, it had no expression of anger or irritation as we had expected; he just smiled). Then, we went down to Aji’s home and got Mamma her gift (a diffuser for our new home), and the dozen or so hand-made notes and cards (each one containing one thing we loved about our Mamma bear) that we had prepared and hidden there (so, we could give her a surprise). That done, we baked, with some help from Rashmi Masi and Chhayaa Didi, fresh chocolate cupcakes, and decorated them with multi-coloured icing. Baba bear was so proud of us (he doesn’t know how easy it is; but can’t blame him, he gets senti with anything we do; he’s just a silly bear) when we sent him photos and videos. Later, we went down again to say bye to Baba bear as we head to Malaka Spice for brunch with Mamma bear and Rashmi Masi.
We love birthdays.
