Men will be men?

Is this a joke to you?

I am as sick of the ‘men get bored and stray, women try to save their marriage’, ‘men like to play around while women like to go to therapy’, and ‘men will be men’ jokes and statements as I am of ‘wife’ jokes.

Both are rather oversimplified (and erroneous) generalisations and not at all funny. Of course, I do not mean to demand their banning or cancelling. It’s a free world. You can crack a joke and others can laugh at it. Remember that it only shows your own understanding (or rather, ignorance) of human relationships.

This kind of sweeping statement and stereotyping demeans those who have actually gone through bad relationships and have first-hand experience of bad marriages. Sometimes, the situation is exactly the opposite. Sometimes, there’s a lot more nuance and complexity in the circumstances. Sometimes, there is simply no explanation of what happened or is happening. And every time, there is pain. Real pain. Joking about it makes it worse.

Kya ch**iyapa hai, yaar? Is that how your marriage looks? Is that how you think others’ marriages look? Is that how you believe marriages ought to look? Matlab kyaa hai tumhaaraa?

I’d rather block such individuals like how I block the ‘wife’ jokes blokes. I’ve had it till here.

P.S: I realise I may have over-reacted there. A joke is an exaggeration and by definition, and most times by design, misses the nuance to make a point, usually humorous. So, apologies. Perhaps it is the stage at which I am in life that has made me overly sensitive and irritable, not to mention biased. Carry on with your jokes! No, really. I don’t have to look or read. It’s a free country. I will scroll on.
