This is not a full review of The Adam Project on Netflix since I’ve watched about 20m of it. But this is an appreciation post for Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, and the writers of this film.
To begin with: Ryan is Deadpool. Always has been. His manner of speaking, his tone, and his jokes are as if Ryan Reynolds is the Clark Kent to Deadpool’s Superman. I am unable to separate them because he has now immortalised that wisecracking wise-ass style and internalised it to a point that all I have to do is hear one joke and I know it’s him. He has used it in all his films, his appearances, his advertisements and promotions, and even in his social media and speeches in real life. You’d think the audience would be bored to death by now. But no. I think he and his writers are a bunch of geniuses and that style has become something of a trademark and an assurance of enjoyable entertainment ahead. Thank you, Ryan and the writers.
Secondly, how did young Walker Scobell get his exact style, mannerisms, and intonation so right? This is beyond brilliant! He is totally believable as a 12yo Reynolds. The writers did a good job, of course. But his execution is beyond the ordinary. I suspect Ryan Reynolds acted out every scene first and then Walker Scobell copied him. But that isn’t to take anything away from the young boy. He is outstanding.
That’s it. That’s the post.
