Why Udupi?

Does anyone know why Udupi and Mangalore are such hotbeds of Hindutva? It’d be interesting to understand the reasons behind it, like the origin story of a supervillain in a comic book. Or how the Empire decided to build the Death Star. Or, if you want a Purana-based analogy, how Bhasmasura got his powers.

Interestingly, Nagpur has a similar history, being the birthplace of many-a-movement, including the Ambedkarite mass conversion, and not just the RSS. Even Communists like Dange and Joshi are said to have had deep ties with the city. Dunno what it is about the water in such places though. Or maybe it has to do with the shared history. It’d still be interesting to find out.

Or is it so simple as what someone recently said: ‘Karnataka is South India’s UP’, which would explain a lot.
