Indlish menus and fast food.

The recent debate on “just-add-boiling-water” foods reminds me of an incident in Pune’s Joshi Hospital where my aunt was admitted for something minor a few years ago. My dad and I wanted something to snack on and went to the hospital’s cafeteria upstairs in a separate building. It had a regular menu and a special menu for ‘Fast items’, which we thought to be a listing of the fast foods they serve. Since we were in a hurry, we thought we’d just order something on the go. Also, we were more than a little intrigued about a hospital canteen serving what is generally known to be unhealthy stuff. So, we asked for the special “fast-food menu.”

The reply of the server had us both in splits, after about a moment it took for us to comprehend the import: “Sir, fast food only on Tuesdays.”

Note: The photo was taken 6 years later, almost to the day, since the original was lost in time. They seem to have changed the menu somewhat.
